Articles 149 and 150 of the Law for Sustainable Rural Development establish that the organisation and integration of the Product Systems will be promoted as Committees of the Mexican Council, with the participation of agricultural producers, agro-industrialists, marketers, for each basic or strategic product, and will be mechanisms for planning, communication and permanent coordination between the economic actors that form part of the production chain. Thus, in 2008, the National Apple Product System Committee was created. The apple sector in Mexico has grown very dynamically in terms of job creation, productivity, exports and linkages and traction for other sectors such as services. In Mexico it is currently cultivated in 23 entities, but the largest production is obtained in the state of Chihuahua; in the year 2022, this entity contributed 87.25% to the total national value of apple sales; its income was 7,740 million pesos, with a production volume of 688,788 tonnes. The price per tonne was 11,237 pesos. In 2022, according to data from the 2022 Yearbook, the world apple production volume amounted to 78.8 million tonnes, with China being the main producer, whose production volume represented 52% of the total world volume. Based on the figures available in INEGI's Trade Balance of Mexican Goods, it is estimated that 24% of the apple consumed in Mexico originates from the foreign market. In 2021, imports accounted for 344 million dollars. Imported apples came mainly from US orchards, however, they were also purchased from 11 additional nations, albeit in smaller volumes. The total volume imported was 266,860 tonnes, while only 993 tonnes were exported, the main client being Belize. In view of the above, it is proposed to declare 20 September of each year as the National Day of the Mexican Apple, as it is a strategic date for the sector, since it marks the end of the harvest in most of the producing regions, thus promoting consumption and consequently strengthening all the links in the production chain.
