En México, coexisten dos tipos de agricultura: la comercial, que utiliza variedades mejoradas, y la de autoconsumo, que emplea variedades tradicionales, representando más del 70% de las unidades de producción. Sin embargo, este último tipo carece de un sistema de registro para las variedades nativas. La propuesta consiste en la actualización del formato de solicitud de inscripción en el Catálogo Nacional de Variedades Vegetales, incorporando un apartado específico para las variedades nativas con el objetivo de caracterizarlas y registrarlas. Se enfoca en considerar las prácticas, usos y costumbres de los agricultores, buscando promover la productividad sostenible de sus cultivos. La iniciativa, alineada con legislación y programas nacionales, anticipa una contribución significativa a la seguridad alimentaria y desarrollo sostenible del país.

In Mexico, two types of agriculture coexist: commercial agriculture, which utilizes improved varieties, and subsistence agriculture, which relies on traditional varieties from local communities, representing over 70% of production units. However, there is currently no registry system for native varieties in the latter type of agriculture. The proposal aims to update the application format for entry into the National Catalog of Plant Varieties, incorporating a specific section for native varieties with the primary goal of characterizing and registering them. This specific approach considers the varieties resulting from farmers' practices, uses, and customs, thus promoting the sustainable productivity of their crops. The absence of quality seeds in native crops has been a determining factor in the low yields of small-scale producers, limiting their potential to enhance the well-being of their families. In alignment with the objectives outlined in the Federal Law for the Promotion and Protection of Native Corn, the National Seed Policy 2020-2024, the National Seed Program 2020-2024, the Sectoral Agriculture Program 2020-2024, and the National Development Plan 2019-2024, this proposal aligns with principles and guidelines guiding agricultural development and the preservation of traditional varieties. Its implementation is expected to significantly contribute to national goals in terms of food security and sustainable development.
