This Official Mexican Standard, submitted here for consideration, establishes the specifications for the labeling of specimens, parts and derivatives of captive-bred totoaba (Totoaba macdonaldi) from Wildlife Conservation Management Units, in order to enable traceability. • This regulatory instrument is mandatory for individuals and legal entities that carry out activities for commercial and noncommercial purposes of totoaba (Totoaba macdonaldi) in the United Mexican States. • Among these specifications is having a registry and management plan for the Units for the Conservation of Wildlife approved by the Ministry for the intensive breeding of totoaba (Totoaba macdonaldi). • It foresees that during the different stages of the production chain, including transport, those involved in activities related with the sustainable use of totoaba (Totoaba macdonaldi) must at all times have the documents proving the legal provenance of specimens, parts and derivatives of the said species, allowing their traceability. • It determines that the legal provenance of totoaba (Totoaba macdonaldi) specimens, parts and derivatives, is demonstrated with the invoice or billing note, as the case may be, as well as with a label. • It mandates those who carry out activities for commercial and non-commercial purposes of totoaba (Totoaba macdonaldi) specimens, parts and derivatives, must use a label that is easily identified, legible and visible, which must be adhered to the container, packaging or other holding devise for its specimens, parts and derivatives. • It also indicates the information that such labels must contain.
