In the hydrological region number 30, Grijalva- Usumacinta, are present the highest biodiversity values in the México, which is largely associated with the rivers, lakes and wetlands existing there. Although numerous federal and state natural protected areas have been declared, as well as almost a dozen RAMSAR sites, and two Presidential Decrees that ratify the conservation vocation for the Usumacinta River basin, actually surface water volumes have not been established for ecological conservation in this region.
From the "AGREEMENT that updates the average annual availability of the surface national waters of the 757 hydrological basins that comprise the 37 hydrological regions in which the United States of Mexico is divided", published in the Official Gazette of the Federation on 07 July 2016, it is clear that in all the 81 studied hydrological basins of the Grijalva Usumacinta Hydrological Region there are volumes that can be exploited, but it is important to carry out an adequate management of these volumes giving priority to the current and future demands of domestic and urban public use. and provide volumes for environmental use or for ecological conservation, in order to contribute to the sustainability of this important area of the country.
